Neath League Division Two
Pontardawe Town 4-1 Inco Vale
Match Report
A totally dominant display by this young side saw them ease past
a battling Inco Vale side by 4 goals to 1. Goals from Liam James
(2), Liam Roberts and an Own Goal were enough to win promotion
as Champions in our first season at this level. Inco Vale pulled
one back right at the end but had already suffered a dismissal
so this was simply a consolation.
This young team full 16 or 17 year olds, together with a few more
experienced heads, have won 16 out of their 20 games scoring 116 goals
with just 26 against. This resulted in an amazing goal difference of 90
and 50 points
On the night everyone contributed with Ben Thomas and Jason Rourke
dominating the aerial battle and James Beer, Liam Griffiths and Liam
James controlling the middle and top end of the field. Other
performances of note came from Liam Roberts, Cameron Harris and Jordan
Harris who has scored over 30 goals this season.
Well done to coaches Paul Williams and Tony Chilcott and to this young
team. This win certainly highlights the outstanding contribution to
football from Pontardawe's Junior section as almost all of this team
came through the section.
Well done also to Johnny Allen and the guys at Cimla for gaining
promotion as runners up.

Match Report
A first half to forget for the lads and in which Rovers will be
disappointed at not taking their chances. The second half was a
different matter and early on a good ball by Ben Thomas set Jake
Barry on a run down the right and he coolly slotted home the
game's first goal. Not long after, a mix up in defence gave
Gazza Lewis an easy tap in and it started to look like the game
was running away from the visitors. This was compounded when the
visiting no.7 stupidly brought down Freddie Beer, who was having
a good second half in midfield together with Gareth Govier, and
the visiting defender was sent off for his second bookable
offence.
The Town lads were
now clearly on top and with the back four looking pretty
comfortable it was down the left, with Jason Rourke and Steven
Hubbuck, where the damage was being done. The third goal came
when Gazza confidently beat the keeper and then super sub Corey
Bevan got in the act after talking the Rovers back four to death
so they simply gave him a goal .... (sorry Corey only joking -
it was a great goal !) ......
The final shout of
the game came from Gazza Lewis who not only scored his hat trick
but also hit the 100th league goal of the season for the home
side which takes them into the last two remaining games at home
to Bryncoch (Sat) and Inco Vale (Tue) with a great chance of
promotion.
Well done to Paul
Williams and his team

Cimla FSC -3-3- Pontardawe Town Cimla win on penalties
Match Report
This was a better game and Pontardawe raced into a 2-0 lead. The
stronger Cimla FSC side, as they had done in the previous encounters,
started to get on top and the game finished 2-2. With each side scoring
a goal apiece in the extra period the game moved onto the dreaded
penalties. Unfortunately it was Pontardawe who failed with their attempt
sending the Cimla team into the final. A kick in the teeth for our guys
but credit to them for standing up to the physicality of the bigger and
older lads and we are sure the lads will learn from this experience.

Match Report
Ponty beat Neath home and away last season in claiming their champions
title but it was not to be repeated at home today. This Neath side had
overtones of Season 2008/2009 when they brought a very young and skill
full side who played Ponty off the pitch and denied Ponty a shot at the
title spot. History was to repeat itself here where a very young
(16-18yrs old) Neath side produced a tremendous display to overwhelm the
Ponty boys.
It started to go wrong for Ponty in the 35th minute when Neath went
ahead. half time came with Ponty 1-0 down but things were to get much
worse just after Ponty missed a glorious chance to pull one back when
Neath got their second on 60 minutes. Shortly afterwards Ponty
introduced some youngsters of themselves, brining on Josh Dorwood and
Liam Griffiths for Gareth Govier and Luke Price. Things went from bad to
worse when Ponty conceded the third on 75 minutes. Ponty now threw on
Gazza Lewis for Trystan Edwards but still could not stop the Neath tide
conceding the fourth on 77 minutes. The scoring and Ponty's miserable
day were wrapped up when Neath got their fifth, heading in unchallenged
on 85 minutes.
This was a shock to Ponty who now have a couple of weeks before the next
game to pull themselves together and produce a combative display which
they are well capable of.

Match Report
Heavy overnight rain did not stop this game going ahead but the surface
was difficult in one of the goalmouth areas with standing water. The
pitch was deemed playable and that's where the good news for Ponty
ended. Ponty never seemed to get going in this game and went behind on
33 minutes with a shot from outside the Ponty area sneaking in the near
post. Ponty went into the half time break 1-0 down.
Ponty pressed and had more of the game in the second half and were
denied two penalty claims for hand ball . Steffan Davies came close to
getting Ponty back on level terms in the 65th minute, but somehow the
keeper turned his effort around the post. Ponty battled but never found
the rhythm to seriously trouble Ely. In the dying minutes, a free kick
half way in the Ponty half was put out for a Ponty throw-in but from
this, Ely won the ball back and their substitute striker put his chance
away to make it 2-0 Ely in the 90th minute. Immediately from the restart
the referee blew for full time. Another disappointment for Ponty who
must now dig deep as they did last year with the games in hand to drag
themselves away from the bottom half of the table

Match Report
Ponty were drawn away in this first round tie but quickly got to work on
a very uneven and bumpy pitch. Tom Blackburn carried on from last week,
tormenting the Ferry right back and twisted him inside and out before
shooting from 5 yards to open the scoring for Ponty on 5 minutes. Ponty
tried to play creative football but the surface thwarted some efforts
before Elliott Thomas got Ponty's second on 15 minutes, beating the
Ferry keeper at his near post. Ponty now took almost total control and
looked to be cruising when CJ Richards netted Ponty's third on 25
minutes from a header. Half time came with Ponty comfortably in charge
and 3-0 up.
The second half saw a fight back from Ferry without really troubling
stand in keeper Christian Evans who had a fantastic game coming out to
claim numerous crosses and instill confidence in the Ponty back four.
The second half saw a little niggle but this was more out of Ferry
frustration than anything else on the level of control Ponty had on this
game. Ponty's afternoon was rounded off when Tom Blackburn grabbed his
second of the game and Ponty's fourth on 80 minutes. Ponty saw the
remainder of the match out in total control for a very well deserved 4-0
margin.

Match Report
The Ponty lads worked from early morning to make sure this game went
ahead following heavy overnight rain - Dan and the lads did a tremendous
job to ensure the pitch was playable for this Reserve Division West
encounter against near neighbours Cwmaman.
Ponty
started confidently on a very difficult surface - Gareth Govier opening
the scoring after 5 minutes with a well struck shot which went under the
keepers body to put Ponty ahead. Cwmaman struck back after 8 minutes
when poor Ponty marking and defending left the striker with a clean
header at goal which went past the town keeper Deano. Ponty kept on
pressing, playing possession football at times with the ever influential
Tom Blackburn getting around the back of the defence on a couple of
occasions. Ponty went ahead on 35 minutes when Tom Blackburn took a VERY
quick free kick just outside the penalty area (much to quick for the
camera - sorry Tom) to take the Cwmaman keeper by surprise to put Ponty
2-1 up. This is how it stayed until half time.
Ponty started the second half well again, taking time
in possession and playing the ball around well. This approach paid
dividends when Matthew Hibbs went on a run into the Cwmaman box and
slotted past the keeper to give Ponty a 2-1 cushion. Ponty should have
gone on to get at least another goal but Cwmaman proved that they will
be no pushovers again this season as they pinned Ponty back for long
periods. Cwmaman deservedly got their second on 80 minutes to make it
3-2 and make Ponty work hard for the last 10 minutes. Ponty laboured at
ties, making it much harder than it should have been during the last 10
minutes to hang on for a very welcome 3 points.
Ponty face Briton Ferry Llansawel in the
cup next Saturday and will be wishing for a repeat of parts of today's
performance

Neath League Open Cup Round One Sunnybank AFC -3-2- Pontardawe Town
Match Report
An entertaining game at Coedgwilym ended with a 3-2 win for the home
team who scored two goals in the last few minutes to disappoint the
young Town side who had played their hearts out against Premier League
opponents.
In a first half that
Sunnybank edged in respect of chances it was Town who gained the
advantage after the energetic Rhodri Dykes was brought down in the box.
Up stepped Gazza Lewis who calmly beat the home keeper with a quality
penalty. This was hard on Sunnybank who had the edge in respect of
chances with the back 4 of Town having a difficult time, especially with
the Sunnybank keeper's kicks.
The second half began
with Town well on top and they were playing some top class free flowing
football. Chances came but they just couldn't find that killer finish.
Then, about half through the half, a long ball from Sunnybank saw keeper
Ryan Herbert come for a 50 / 50 ball but the referee adjudged he had
taken out the player and a penalty was awarded, and scored, by the home
team despite strong protestations from the Town team as the Ryan
definitely got the ball first.
This was a good game
by now and with about 8 minutes left on the clock a great ball by Jason
Rourke put Josh Dorward away and he scored over the keeper from a tight
angle to give the visitors a sniff of a major upset. But it wasn't to be
as another ball over the top saw the Sunnybank centre half, who had
moved up to centre forward, beat Ryan to the ball to slot home the
equaliser.
More disappointment
was to come when Jason Rourke was deemed to handle the ball and
Sunnybank stole the show with another well take penalty that gave
Ryan no chance. A late header by Rourke just glanced the post but the
referee;s whistle brought an end to the game that saw a massive sigh of
relief from the Sunnybank lads who were the first to applaud the
Ponty lads for their performance.
A massive performance
by the young team with notable performances from Ryan Herbert (GK), Liam
Griffiths, Jack Medwin, Rhodri Dykes and the two centre halves, Corey
Bevan and Ben Thomas. Well done lads .....

Neath League Division Two Cimla -3-3- Pontardawe Town
Match Report
Despite being 2-1 up at half time, Ponty Town earned a hard fought 3-3
draw against a well organised and strong Cimla side.
Ponty had the spoil
of early possession which saw the lads play composed, possessive and
quick football, which Cimla found difficult to contain, the resultant
pressure saw well taken goals from first Josh Dorward and then Jordan
Harries, putting Town up 2-0.
To their credit, Cimla never gave up and battled their way back into the
game, playing some good football up to and through their very strong 2
forwards. These forwards forced Ponty on the back foot and eventually
from a resulting corner, Cimla scored shortly before half time.
The second half saw a 'Battle Royale' between these two committed teams
and again Cimla proved dangerous through the middle and their strikers,
but for some resolute defending and fine keeping, Cimla could well have
added to their score early in the half. Indeed it was a sucker punch of
route one football that proved Ponty's undoing, when the opposition
equalised, with their striker latching onto a deep and long goal kick.
Cimla, now on the ascendency, continued to pressure the Ponty defence
and eventually got their reward with another goal to make it 3-2. For
most sides this would have been the final nail in the coffin, but our
young side never gave up and believed in their ability to turn it around
and turn it around they did. Cimla had thus far played a with a deep
defensive line, and so Ponty midfield and defence contrived to draw this
defence further up the pitch, by waging a midfield battle deep in their
own half. A strategy that required the defenders and keeper to be strong
and solid. The strategy worked and allowed for a number of breaks which
saw the Cimla defence being exposed by the Ponty strikers. Although
these breaks were eventually contained, Cimla were rattled and their
midfield retreated to their defensive line which allowed the Ponty lads
to play their football in and around the oppositions 18 yard box. A
number of free kicks and corners allowed Ponty to barrage their goal and
with 5 minutes left to play, Rhodri Dykes scored from close range
bringing leveling the scores and ensuring a share of the points.
Every one of the Ponty players gave this match their all and battled
hard to get a deserved result and each one is to be proud of their
efforts; be in no doubt this is a massive result against one of the
strong and favoured sides in this league.

Match Report Ponty made the short journey
to near rivals West End in this Reserve Division West encounter and got
off to a very slow start and were 1-0 down after just 2 minutes. Ponty
went 2-0 down just 2 minutes later when the stand in keeper Gazza "the
cat" Lewis brought down the West End striker in the box for as clear cut
penalty as you will ever see. Ponty were rocking and just could not
contain the movement and pace of the west End side. Nerves were frayed
as West End hit the bar and post before Luke Price settled Ponty nerves
when he headed home on 20 minutes from a corner. Ponty's cause was not
helped with Liam James leaving the pitch early on with a twisted ankle.
Ponty started to settle and play but they were further rocked when West
End got their third on 35 minutes direct from a corner. Ponty knew they
had to get a grip on the game if they were to get anything out of this
game but went into the half time break grateful that they only trailed
3-1 as it could have been much, much worse.
Ponty made a change at half time with Trystan
going off to be replaced with Tom Blackburn and went close to reducing
the deficit when they also hit the bar and post. West End hit back and
made it 4-1. Ponty now seemed to smell the coffee and some pride could
be seen when Rob Fulford nodded in from a corner to make it 4-2. West
End were now on the back foot with Ponty playing some great football.
Tom Blizzard on as a substitute made it 4-3 and the game was all now
Ponty. It could surely only be a matter of time before Ponty drew level
as they were now far the better side. Ponty's chance came but the ball
hit the bar and went to safety. Ponty continued to press until the final
whistle but after a very poor start, the lads must be encouraged by the
shock that they gave West End who will undoubtedly be at the top of the
league challenging for the title come the end of the season.

Welsh League Division One
Pontardawe Town -2-1- Garden Village
Match Report
A cracking
day down at the Recreation Ground saw an entertaining, if somewhat
uncompromising, local derby between two sides who were desperate to kick
start their seasons.
In the first half both teams
gave it a go but despite the fact that the football wasn't of the
highest quality it was an entertaining game which saw both keepers, Dean
Morgan (Town) and Mark Snell (Village), pull off some excellent saves.
Village also hit the bar just as the half came to an end.
The second half was only
4 minutes old when Sam Wade broke through on the left and produce an
excellent shot which Snell was unable to stop hitting the back of the
net. Within 3 minutes another move down the left saw Arwel Rees hit a
low cross which deceived everyone to go in giving Town a 2 goal
advantage.
But it was Village's turn
next when after 55 minutes referee Mark Dyson (Abertillery) gave a very
dubious penalty decision against Town substitute Shaw which Jack Shannon
put away well.
This was now a good game but
some disappointing refereeing from Mr Dyson was starting to spoil events
and tensions on and off the field were getting to boiling point. Chances
came at either end and with Village piling on the pressure only some
great keeping by Dean Morgan kept them out. A late scare from a corner
to Village was the last piece of action and when Mr Dyson blew up
it was a great feeling to get a win after 4 defeats on the bounce.
It has to be noted that at a
cost of £116 for the game the officials were poor on the day and with
upwards of 7 bookings in what was a competitive, but not nasty game, it
has to be considered how much influence on a referee does an assessor
have whilst at the game?

Match Report
Ponty visited good friends and neighbours in this Reserve Division West
game. Afan Lido have had a great start to the season being unbeaten and
sitting on top of the league.
This turned out to be a very tight affair with chances limited for both
sides. The first half proved to be a midfield battle with Lido holding
onto possession well with Ponty trying to hit them on the break. Both
sides played some good football with probably Lido spurning the best
chance of the first half when two players had the chance to put the ball
in the net but miss-kicked for the Ponty stand-in keeper "The Cat" Lewis
to collect safely. Half time came with the sides level 0-0.
The
second half saw a bit more goalmouth action and Ponty had the chance to
go ahead when Liam James was played through only to see his shot rebound
off the post and into the grateful Lido keepers hands. Lido again had a
couple of good chances to sneak it after Ponty made a couple of changes
due to injury but Ponty held on with a very young finishing side to
claim a valuable point against one of the sides likely to be challenging
for Pontys title as champions come the end of the year

-6-7- Miners FC
Match Report
The lads
suffered their first defeat to a very physical and committed Miners
side. Going a goal behind in the first 5 minutes didn’t bode well and
when they extended their lead it was always a game of catch up. However,
the boys showed courage and commitment, continuing to battle to get
something out of a game that had a number of challenges designed to test
the composure, confidence and resilience of a young Ponty side. There
were a number of noteworthy performances down the spine of the side, but
more composure was required from a side that has proven their
footballing acumen so far this season; uncharacteristic mistakes proved
to be very costly, which to their credit, The Miners clinically
capitalised on. However scoring 6 goals when not firing on all cylinders
and in a very intimidating arena shows the underlying quality of this
side, a quality which has not gone unnoticed amongst the other teams in
this league.

Another good performance by this young side against a strong and
competitive Longford FC. The visitors tried to soften up the

pace of the lads, together with a resolute defence, saw the team to to
the top of the table. Goals from Jordan Harris (2), Jason Rourke (2),
Liam Griffiths, Josh Dorward, Jake Barry and Luke Evans made the
scoreline a true reflection of the Pontardawe lads's command of the
game. Despite his team's late defeat to the mighty Superhoops, Jason

Nathanial Sales Cup Round One
Llanwern AFC -2-1- Pontardawe Town
Match Report
A lovely
September day at Newport stadium saw us reach one of the lowest points
in recent years after defeat by Llanwern of the 3rd Division.
On a lovely surface
Pontardawe were the better team in the first half but created very few
chances with the only notable one coming from Llanwern when Mike Vaux
volleyed over the bar from close range.
At half time Pontardawe Town
brought on Andrew Shaw for Rob Fulford and this immediately paid
dividends when he hit home after a flowing move. It started with
Christian Evans hitting a long diagonal ball to Luke Evans who showed
enough composure to put over a cross to the far post where Shaw met it
with a sweet volley which looped over the keeper into the net.
This should have been enough
to kickstart the team but it was Llanwern who pushed on and showed the
greater desire to go through to the next round. They achieved this with
two goals from the every busy Andrew Larcombe who scored with 2 headers
on 56 minutes and 67 minutes. As the clock ticked away Pontardawe never
looked like getting back to it although we did put the ball in the
net but Andrew Lewis was 2-3 yards off side from Mark Nappiaralla's free
kick.
It is now time for everyone
at the club to pull together and meet this challenge head on. Heads are
down at the moment but with the league now our only challenge and with
only 3 games of a busy season under our belt we still have a lot to play
for.
Well done to Llanwern and we
wish them well for the next round.

Match Report Ponty went into this game wishing to make a

Paul Thomas settled what little Ponty nerves there were, netting
after just 3 minutes. Further goals followed from Liam James on
28 and 33 minutes before Tom Blackburn made it 4-0 on 43
minutes. Ponty went into the half time break deservedly 4-0 up.
The
second half started and continued, much as the first half had with
Pontardawe making all the play. Ammanford were able to pass the ball
around when they managed to gain possession but lacked that cutting edge
that Ponty oozed. Ianto (Ian Jones) got the score line ticking away
again for Ponty on 51 minutes, followed in quick succession by Liam
James grabbing his hat-trick on 52 minutes, James Pickup making it 7-0
on 55 minutes with Tom Blackburn making it 8-0 on 59 minutes, with Tom
Blackburn then grabbing his hat-trick and Ponty's 9th on 65 minutes. The
expectant Ponty following had to wait until the 82nd minute for Arwel
Rees to make it 10-0 with the performance rounded off in the 85th minute
by Ianto grabbing his second and Ponty's 11th.
This was a commanding display by Ponty and sets the
groundwork for another successful season if this performance can be
taken into subsequent games.
Man of the match award was tied and went to Ianto and

The second

Match Report
Ponty made the journey east to take on Pontypridd in round 1 of this
seasons FAW Cup. Ponty started well and created a couple of chances in
the first 5 minutes which they failed to take. Pontypridd are a physical
side and at times the Ponty lads had difficulty in dealing with their
direct "physicality" shall we call it. Pontypridd took the lead when
their number 10 headed home. Shortly afterwards Andy Lewis took a
cynical elbow to the back of the head (caught on camera) from the
Pontypridd number 10 and required lengthy treatment before he could
resume. Ponty went into the half time break 1 -0 down. Andy Lewis did
not return for the second half with Stokesy taking his place, forcing a
rejig at the back for Ponty.
Pontypridd continued with their physical game but scored a very good
second goal when a runner was not fully tracked and latched onto a great
through ball to turn the Ponty right back Luke and slot the ball passed
the Ponty keeper Ryan to make it 2-0. Ponty were awarded a penalty when
Stefan was brought down by the Pontypridd keeper but Luke Harris's kick
was saved. As the game drew to a close frustration was etched on the
Ponty players faces but they were not to repeat the start of last years
great cup run.
To the Muppet sitting behind the camera and who complained at every
Pontardawe tackle...and had a comment about every referring decision
that went against them, take a look at some of the Pontypridd tackles
and judge for yourself from the video if the referee was right after
all... I think you will find he did quite well.

Match Report
The less said about this one the better. The committee worked hard all
week to prepare the ground but were let down, again, by the council so a
number of issues were raised by the referee and visitors in respect of
the pitch. These will be discussed with the council in due course.
As for the game it was a remarkable turn around following Wednesday
night's heroics. Goals from Jack Germaine (2) and Paul Evans (2) gave
the visitors a win that probably deserved more goals.
The Town lads are capable of beating anyone so we look for them to
bounce back next week at Pontypridd in the cup.

Match Report
A great
start to the season for the lads in what for anyone would be a daunting
opener. A good first half was marred by a penalty given when Luke Harris
brought down Jacob Daley. This was scored by Richard French which saw the hosts take a lead into half time. The second
half belonged to Town who secured a memorable win with two goals from
substitute Chris Allen. This was an outstanding second half team effort
and we look to carry this confidence into Saturday's tough home opener
with Bryntirion Athletic.
